For this assignment I wanted to make a magazine that reflected art that I like, and inspires me. When creating both of these covers I wanted to make something that was simple and not overwhelming. When I think of magazine covers I always think of magazines you find the checkout of a grocery store. They are always bright and cluttered. I personally don't like them, but they gave me an idea of how to use color.
For both covers I wanted a minimal aesthetic. On the first magazine I wanted to use red as the main color because it stands out. I see red used on many magazines for this reason. Time magazine is a good example of this. I also wanted the magazine to have an eerie tone to it. The color red is often associated with danger. I also feel like I accomplished this tone by having the title against the side of the page and elongating the bottom of it.
On the second magazine I kept the same aesthetic, but I wanted to have an opposite tone. I used blue for the main color because its still a high energy color that stands out, but its a cool color and is more calming than red. For all the text I decided to use a serif font and I made all the letters lowercase. When I think of the color blue I think of the ocean. Therefore, for my image I used I wanted something that was wavy. I took a picture of a lava lamp in my room, and used the liquify tool to just distort the image into something wavy.

The first variation of Asst. 3 was hard for me to read. The type one type is easy to read but I think it is to small. The type hierarchy goes form small to large very quickly. If the from my eyes type was somewhere in-between it would be more effective. The larger type on the edge of the page is cut off so the word is hard to read. The type itself is not one that I find good for reading. I like the idea of the zine. Seeing things through some one ells eyes can make you see things differently.
ReplyDeleteThe 2nd cover I really like. The placement of type is more effective. The repeating of the wording across the cover is effective. The color an abstractness of color and negative space works well.
Hey Nick! I honestly have to agree with Jane in that I am having some difficulties in reading the covers. The small white font in front of the lightly colored background makes reading quite tricky for the second cover. However, I do like your use of color in the first cover to give a lot of contrast in front of the black background. I feel that both of your back covers could use with some changes. With the use of the grid, it is much more obvious in your first cover. I can see the use with how the text is laid out. On the second cover, I really like how the title of the magazine is placed in the upper corner. For whatever reason, it just feels like it fits. The second cover would certainly look interesting to see in print when it is all flattened out. Other than the legibility issues, I like your covers! I look forward to seeing what you make next.
ReplyDeleteI really liked both versions of your zine. They are very clean and organized well compositionally. With composition, I feel even though the first zine is set up backwards from the way people usually read (title on right, other less important info on left) viewers are still able to understand the flow. They both have different aspects that would catch the viewers' eye. In the first zine it's the bold, interesting font choice along with the red against the black background. In the second, it's the cool marble pattern. The only change I would suggest is increasing the font of the strip "from my eyes" to make it more legible. I also like how this text strip lines up with the marble on the back page.
